Korea Launches First Containership Built for Autonomous Operations

South Korea proudly launched Pos Singapore, a groundbreaking autonomous containership, signalling a significant stride toward Level 3 autonomous shipping.

The vessel, crafted for Pan Ocean by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, spans 564 feet with a TEU capacity of 1,800. Scheduled for delivery this month, it’s poised for outfitting and testing of its cutting-edge autonomous system.

As part of the Advanced Maritime Mobility Development Strategy, the South Korean government has allocated over $120 million for research and development in autonomous vessels since 2020. The vessel’s design anticipates achieving IMO Level 3 autonomy, enabling remote-controlled operations without onboard crew.

The inaugural international demonstrations are scheduled for September 2024, showcasing South Korea’s commitment to pioneering autonomous shipping technologies.
